What is Public Protection?

Public Protection is about the prevention of harm to children, young people and adults wherever possible. It involves Adult Support and Protection, Child Protection, eradicating and preventing Violence Against Women and Girls and the Multi-Agency Public Protection Arrangements (to manage sexual and violent offenders).

People may experience different types of harm and be involved with different services at the same time. Public Protection is about everyone working together to keep vulnerable young and older people safe – and recognising their joint responsibility to do so.

Having a Public Protection lens appreciates the need for protection at different times across someone’s lifespan. It recognises the ways in which the long-lasting and cumulative experience of trauma and adversity increase vulnerability to harm and the need for support.

A Public Protection approach recognises that there are common themes, knowledge and skills in how we assess and manage risk, intervene and support vulnerable children, adults and families, and it is therefore important to work together to share knowledge and skills.
