Who to contact if you are concerned that an adult is at risk of harm
East Lothian
If you are concerned about an adult living in East Lothian, you can refer your concerns to Social Work.

If you are concerned about an adult living in Midlothian, you can refer your concerns to Social Work.

For out of office hours referrals to Social Work, you can call the Emergency Social Care Service on 0800 731 6969 (freephone) (Monday to Thursday 5pm to 8:30am, weekends from Friday 3:55pm to 8:30am).

What happens next?
A Social Worker who is called a Council Officer will assess the adult’s situation. This will involve speaking to other people who know the adult, such as the adult’s GP or anyone providing care for the adult. The Council Officer may also speak to the adult’s family or carers. The Council Officer will take account of the wishes and feelings of the adult at risk and the views of others, such as the adult’s close relatives.

Hourglass provides the UK’s only dedicated Helpline for those experiencing (or concerned about) the harm, abuse or exploitation of older people. The Helpline is available Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm. It’s entirely confidential and free to call from a landline or mobile and will not appear on your phone bill.

Suicide Prevention – Help is available when someone is feeling so low that they have thoughts about harming themselves. You should contact the person’s GP immediately, or contact NHS 24 on 111 out of ours. If there is an immediate threat to life, contact 999 or take the person to the nearest Emergency Department.
